Hey, photographer! Where should we take our photos in Iowa City this year?

This is one of the top FAQs surrounding portrait photography-whether its a photographer or a client. Photographers love observing the light and choosing what will make the most beautiful background/backdrop. Every photographer of course has a different style as well. Some locations work better for certain styles. Typically the location is chosen first, before deciding on other details such as wardrobe/what to wear. I have previously written a blog on some of my favorite outdoor locations surrounding Iowa City. Today we are going to chat about a different location trend.

I want to share with you one of my absolute favorite trends that is taking over family photography. I should clarify- at least the photographers that I personally love and admire their work. The trend is keeping it keeping it more casual. This goes beyond just the location though, so let’s chat about it.

Trends for Photographers (2026): Iowa City Photographers, edition.

OUT with formal button-down shirts, maxis or even families in fields. 👗

OUT with super posed or stiff feeling portraits 🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️🧍

IN with clothes that feel like you (whether that is wearing something in your closet or at least choosing something you would wear again!). 👌

IN with the everyday stuff! ❤️📷

IN with longer, less stressful sessions

IN with locations that feel like you (somewhere you would actually hang out!)

Yes, I am still all for frolicking in nature. I personally love being outside, so I would never dissuade you from that! Especially if you as a couple or a family love going on nature walks. But I am also absolutely in love with how much more authentic and casual a simple session at home or a favorite spot can be. I see this trend catching on in a lot of cities around the US. But in our little college town of Iowa City, I still mostly experience families that are looking for the “usual” outdoor photos. This may be because that is what families are used to seeing and hearing about.

Creating a session with your Iowa City Photographer that feels like a morning or evening that would actually happen. Part of your family’s routine and/or rhythm. Maybe that means enjoying a homemade brunch, reading together in the living room, playing in the backyard, or enjoying the library etc.

Do you need some ideas of what you and your partner or family could do to make your photos a little more fun, joyful or unique? Here’s a blog for you! Ideas for Family Photos

I have started extended my photo sessions (how long they are), because it reinforces what I love to capture. People in their element. I want my clients to feel more comfortable to open up in front of the camera. It also places less stress and pressure on the family. Part of what I have observed is that kids often “act out” when they are being “forced” to do something. Longer sessions with different activities give space and time for this. It becomes less about “my family/kids need to “perform”. I can capture more authentic interactions and a kid’s personality, childlike wonder. A mother’s tenderness and love for her partner and children. I can capture the family having fun and joyful moments together. That is the magic.
